The Avast Home Edition antivirus is an excellent freeware antivirus program. The license allows you to use it for non commercial use. The current version 4.8 comes with buit-in antispyware and anti-rootkit. You have to register after you download and install it. The registration is free and they mail you the product key which remains valid for one year. After which you can renew again for free.

The Autoupdate is excellent, usually it updates itself as the computer is started and is connected to the internet.  The delection is good. The best part of it is the ability to schedule a boot time scan, which is an essential feature in removing the viruses which affect the memory.
