Boot in safe mode in xp

Tutorials - Windows XP

If you are unable to delete the malware files/ folders, try doing it after booting your computer in windows safe mode. You can boot in safe mode by pressing F8 during startup, or using the msconfig utility.

Turn off the computer first, and then start it (this is different that restarting the computer) When th computer starts to boot, tap on the F8 key several times till you see a boot menu on the screen. You have different boot options. Out of them you can choose to boot in safe mode without networking or with networking, as you require.  Once you are done with the safe boot, you can simply restart the computer to go back to the normal mode.

You can also do that through the msconfig command. Click on Start > Run, type msconfig, press Ok. That will bring up the System configuration Uility.  Click on the tab named BOOT.INI,  Under Boot Options select the check box of /SAFEBOOT , you will see four radio buttons, you can choose Minimal - for Safe Mode, and Network - for Safe mode with networking.  Now press Apply, Press Close, it will ask you to restart the computer, do so, and it will take you straight to the mode of your choice.

In order to come back to the normal mode, you need to open the system configuration utility again, and uncheck the box of /SAFEBOOT and restart the computer. It will not automatically restart in normal mode as in the previous case.
